The Pakistan Navy has officially inducted its first Type 039A diesel-electric submarine, Hangor, into its fleet in China. The commissioning ceremony was attended by President Asif Ali Zardari as the chief guest, while Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Noman Bashir was also present. In his address at the ceremony, President Zardari described the commissioning as a significant milestone in the navy’s modernization and development efforts. He asserted that Pakistan possesses the full capacity to defend its sovereignty, protect its maritime interests, and safeguard its economic routes.
In his address at the commissioning ceremony of the second Type 039A submarine, PS Shushuk, Admiral Noman Bashir stated that an important obstacle in major sea routes poses a significant threat to global trade and energy transmission. The Hangor-class submarines, he added, will play a vital role in deterring aggression and protecting trade routes in the Arabian Sea.
The Admiral also referred to the historic role of the former Hangor submarine, which had sunk an enemy ship in 1971, marking the first time a submarine had done so after World War II. The new Hangor-class submarines are equipped with cutting-edge technology, including a air-independent propulsion system, advanced sonar, silent design, and the ability to operate for extended periods underwater.
The commissioning of the submarine is seen as a significant example of the strong defense cooperation between Pakistan and China. The Pakistani Navy’s Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Noman Bashir, has congratulated the nation and the Pakistani Navy on this achievement, while the government has also congratulated the nation on this successful endeavor.
