The former Minister of Finance, Miftah Ismail, has stated that the government has benefited oil companies rather than the people. In a statement, he claimed that the government has increased the levy on petrol by Rs. 20 per liter, resulting in oil companies earning an additional Rs. 35 per liter. Similarly, the levy on diesel has been reduced by Rs. 20 per liter, resulting in oil companies earning an additional Rs. 70 per liter. This means that oil companies are earning a significant amount of money at the expense of consumers and the government.
Former Minister Miftah Ismail stated that the prices of oil companies, which are selling petrol and diesel today, were lower before February 28, and the prices set from March 1 to 15 already included costs and profits. There is no need to increase prices and give oil companies more profits.
Miftah Ismail also stated that the number of children out of school in Pakistan is much higher than in India. He claimed that this is equivalent to benefiting from the crisis and giving more profits to oil companies, just like the government allowed sugar mills to export sugar, benefiting the owners but harming the people.
He also stated that if the government wanted to avoid the petrol shortage, it could have increased the levy for a week or improved the monitoring of oil companies and petrol pumps. However, the government chose to benefit oil companies instead.
