In a move that has raised concerns among legal experts, US President Donald Trump has requested a meeting with the Department of Justice to discuss the resolution of a $10 billion tax case against him. The case, which has been ongoing since 2017, centers around Trump’s alleged failure to pay taxes on his income, and his subsequent lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the US Treasury Department.
According to court documents, Trump’s lawyers have requested a 90-day stay of the case to allow for a “meaningful resolution.” The lawsuit has been met with criticism from legal experts, who argue that it is flawed due to a disputed method of calculating damages, the contractor’s status, and a possible violation of the two-year statute of limitations.
One of the main concerns is the conflict of interest, as Trump has significant influence over the Department of Justice and other government agencies. Trump has stated that if any payment is made, it will be to charitable organizations, but experts argue that this move could also be in violation of the US Constitution.
This is not the only case involving Trump, as he has also filed a $15 billion lawsuit against The New York Times for libel. Additionally, three former FBI officials have filed a class-action lawsuit against Trump’s administration, alleging that they were fired in retaliation for their work on the Mueller investigation.
Meanwhile, tensions are escalating between Iran and the US, as Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps has fired on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, causing a global oil crisis. Iran has also warned that it will not back down from its demands, and has partially reopened its airspace and airports.
In other news, Pakistan’s State Bank has announced that a $1.3 billion payment to the United States was a safe deposit payment made through a Pakistan account.
