The Punjab government has enforced Section 144 in Lahore, following its implementation in other cities across the province.
The Punjab Home Department has issued a notification confirming the enforcement of Section 144, which will be in effect from October 3 to October 8 for six days.
According to the notification, all forms of political gatherings, sit-ins, rallies, protests, and similar activities will be banned within the city limits during this period.
The notification further states that, due to security threats, any public gathering could serve as an easy target for terrorists. Therefore, the decision to impose Section 144 was made upon the recommendation of the district administration.
It is worth noting that Section 144 has already been implemented in other districts of Punjab, including Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Toba Tek Singh, Mianwali, Chiniot, and Jhang. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has called for a protest at Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore on October 5.
Additionally, the Punjab government has introduced an amendment bill in the provincial assembly, allowing for the enforcement of Section 144 for a minimum of three months. This colonial-era law is used to restrict public gatherings.
