Oncor says last week’s series of thunderstorms that wreaked havoc across North Texas was the worst in the utility company’s 112-year history. The electric delivery company said Thursday that while the May 28 storm was second-worst in terms of the 650,000 outages reported, it was tops when considering both the outages and the damage done to equipment and facilities needing repair. Waves of additional thunderstorms that followed Tuesday brought more soaking rain and then flooding. The downpours then damaged more equipment, knocked even more people offline, and led to a cascading effect of prolonged delays in restoring electrical service, the…

And for that reason, I’m out. Billionaire Mark Cuban used that line regularly when appearing on “Shark Tank” — and he essentially dropped it on the Dallas Mavericks in November when he abruptly sold his majority stake in the franchise. Might he now be having seller’s remorse? Cuban remains a minority shareholder and is in full control of basketball operations, but the Mavs’ newest owners could be in line for a very early return on their investment. Winning a championship certainly provides a nice boost in value. The Mavs will take on the Boston Celtics in Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Thursday night, with the…
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — According to Houston Public Works, the team felt victorious this time last year. They had water main breaks down to less than 100 across the city. However, according to previous reporting, that number only grew. From June 1 to Sept. 30, 2023, the city received 19,170 calls for water leaks. After determining which ones the department was responsible for, the city repaired over 4,200 in the same time frame. However, after a bribery scheme involving water line repair contractors was exposed, the city worries leaks could be a problem again this year. “Not knowing which repairs were…
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Houston rapper and philanthropist Bun B spoke for the first time Thursday from the witness stand about what happened to him and his wife, Queenie, during a home invasion in April 2019. It’s taken five years for the trial to get to this point, and it was clear that Bun B was ready to testify. He explained to the court how that violent, attempted robbery “still affects our life.” Bun B, whose real name is Bernard Freeman, testified for 20 minutes during robber Demonte Jackson’s sentencing hearing. Jackson, who was 20 years old at the time of…
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Police are searching for two young suspects accused of shooting and killing an employee at the Houston Farmers Market in the Greater Heights area early Thursday morning. The deadly shooting happened just before 4:20 a.m. on Airline Drive, just south of I-610 North Loop. The family has identified the victim as 36-year-old Damon Price. HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — A grieving family is looking for answers about why someone stabbed their son to death as he came home from a job interview. Investigators said on Wednesday, sometime after 4:30 p.m., Rafielle Andrews was standing around the 2600 block of Sandlewood Trail Lane in north Harris County. Authorities said the 40-year-old had a toy in one hand and a knife in the other. Andrews allegedly tried to stab a woman, but the knife had a sheath on it, and she only suffered a bruise. Investigators believe Andrews then flagged down Chris Dang, who was driving home…
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The Houston Police Department has walked back whether a man shot by officers in an apartment hallway ever fired at them. On Wednesday, HPD said it had proof, but on Thursday, officials said they are investigating to determine if he fired at all. In the Ring doorbell camera footage that a resident sent, officers respond to a burglary call hurrying down the hallway inside Flats on Tanglewilde on Houston’s west side. “It sounded like firecrackers, like ‘Pop!'” one resident said. Another resident, who didn’t feel safe showing her face or giving her name, said she heard the…
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A program that helped thousands of young people find jobs in Houston appears to be different under a new administration. Hire Houston Youth helps young people find work Luis Moreno knows how important the summer months are for students. “The summer is where I learned the most,” Moreno recalled. “Nothing beats on-the-job training.” He received this experience eight years ago when he discovered Hire Houston Youth, a program that took him from the University of Houston to city hall. “This is a stepping stone, especially for those marginalized communities that don’t have that social capital,” Moreno explained. The…
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — When the Houston Police Department shelved more than 260,000 incident reports, it blamed staffing. Now, city officials are looking to expand their ranks. Sixty-eight cadets became HPD officers Thursday morning. Officials told their graduation was a welcome Band-Aid on a much bigger issue. “Houston, we have a problem,” Mayor John Whitmire said of department staffing. In May, acting chief Larry Satterwhite told the Houston City Council that the department had 300 fewer than it did in 1998. “(We’re) short staffed. We’re in the middle of an incident investigation,” Whitmire said. Since 2016, the department has shelved more…
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — Authorities are looking for two juveniles they say set a 6-week-old kitten on fire Thursday morning. The cruel crime was captured on multiple surveillance cameras around 1 a.m. on the 12600 block of Drifting Woods Drive in northeast Harris County. You can see the kitten running down the street engulfed in flames as a dog that a witness told Eyewitness News belongs to one of the suspects and pursues it. The suspects can be heard cackling as the kitten burns. “I heard laughing. I thought they were having a party outside or something,” Arleth Garcia said.…
