India has strongly reacted to US President Donald Trump’s statement calling the country a “hell hole,” a phrase reportedly used by a US radio host Michael Savage and shared by Trump on his social media account without any comment. Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said the statement is “misinformed, inappropriate, and reflects poor taste.”
Social media users in India have taken a stand against the Modi government, with many calling Trump’s remarks “unbecoming” and “inaccurate” as they reflect poorly on the long-standing bilateral relationship between India and the US. The Indian opposition party Congress has also condemned the statement, calling it “a deep disrespect to every Indian” and urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to register a strong protest with the US President.
Meanwhile, the US embassy in India has clarified that Trump has previously referred to India as a “great country” and has described its leadership as a good friend. The US has around 5.5 million people of Indian origin living in the country, and the two nations are currently working on a trade agreement to boost bilateral trade.
This is not the first time Trump has made controversial statements about various countries and immigrant groups. In a separate development, the Abu Dhabi Police and Customs have warned about the rise of online fraud. Naheed’s brother Zaid Hassan spoke to the Bangladeshi media, saying that the police have conducted DNA tests on the body parts found in the residence, which match the DNA of his sister Naheed.
