According to reports, 32-year-old Spho Dlamini, stated that after arriving in Russia, his clothes, documents, and personal belongings were confiscated, and he was sent to fight without proper training. The reports indicate that hundreds of South African youths, aged between 20 and 39, were sent to Russia last year, with some claiming they were promised VIP bodyguard training but were later forced to fight in Ukraine’s eastern region of Donbas.
This scandal has also implicated South Africa’s former President Jacob Zuma’s daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, who is accused of playing a role in the recruitment of young people. Following this scandal, she has resigned from her parliamentary seat, and police have launched an investigation into the allegations.
The affected youths claim that Russian forces sent African fighters on the most perilous missions and subjected them to racial discrimination. Some individuals were even sent to retrieve wounded soldiers and bodies during drone attacks. The South African government claims to have repatriated 15 citizens from Russia, with two reported dead, one injured, and one lost a leg in a drone attack.
