The Sindh Assembly witnessed a heated debate on Wednesday, with Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah presenting a resolution against the division of the province. During his speech, the chief minister emphasized that efforts were underway to “cut Sindh to pieces.” Opposition leader in the Sindh Assembly, Ali Khurshid, countered that the stance of the nationalist party and the Pakistan Peoples Party was similar.
Khurshid condemned the proposals for creating a separate province of Karachi and dividing Sindh, stating that the latter was the province that had helped form Pakistan. Chief Minister Shah further clarified that a two-thirds majority was required in the assembly to create new provinces, adding that those opposing the resolution were essentially advocating for the division of Sindh. He claimed that every individual who loved Pakistan would support the resolution, as it was part of a larger mission to disrupt the unity and peace in the country.
However, the opposition alliance, led by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), held a press conference in Islamabad, where PTI leader and former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa finance minister, Imran Khan, criticized the government’s claims of economic improvement as baseless. Another PTI leader, Khalid Mehmood, emphasized the importance of dialogue in resolving issues, stating that Pakistanis were a peace-loving people who had entered a critical juncture. He added that the decision to proceed now rested with the country’s leaders.
Meanwhile, the Sindh government arrested a man in the city’s Lyari Chakiwara area for allegedly attempting to molest a minor girl. Shandana Gulzar, a senior Sindh government official, claimed that such statements were often a result of personal trauma, old age, and excessive mental pressure.
Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon criticized certain individuals for politicizing every issue and spreading despair. The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) submitted its annual report to the Ministry of Interior.
