Pakistan’s authorities have launched a crackdown on police officers accused of being involved in the narcotics trade, with 113 officers being targeted in three districts, Mirpur Khas, Umerkot, and Tharparkar. According to Director General (DG) of the Intelligence Bureau, 75 officers have been issued show-cause notices, while 38 have been suspended. Two key members of a cross-border narcotics ring have also been arrested during the operation.
The crackdown, which is taking place in the Police Range of Mirpur Khas, Umerkot, and Tharparkar, has also seen the suspension of several District Police Officers (DPOs) and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs). The authorities have stated that all bus stations, except for one in Faizabad, have been reopened, while the Faizabad bus terminal will remain closed until further notice.
In other news, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian met to discuss bilateral relations and ways to strengthen ties between the two countries. The Iranian delegation also included officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance.
Meanwhile, a high-level delegation from Iran, led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, arrived in Islamabad to discuss issues related to the upcoming visit of President Ebrahim Raisi to Pakistan. The delegation also included officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance.
Separately, the government has announced that it will provide financial assistance to the families of the victims of the recent terrorist attack in Peshawar. The assistance will include a one-time payment of Rs. 1 million to each family, as well as a monthly stipend of Rs. 50,000 for a period of six months.
