Bangladeshi nationalist party leader Habib Ullah died after falling off a polling station in Khulna, a city in Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi media reports that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has accused the Jamaat-e-Islami party workers of pushing Habib Ullah. According to BNP, Habib Ullah, 60, fell while being pushed and got a head injury. He was taken to a hospital where doctors confirmed his death.
The parliamentary elections in Bangladesh have concluded with the counting of ballots underway. The country’s 299 constituencies witnessed a peaceful voting process from 6 am to 3 pm local time. However, the BNP leader’s death has sparked a controversy between the two parties.
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) leader Muhammad Ruhul Amin denied the BNP’s allegations, stating that BNP workers were trying to remove JUI women from the polling station. He claimed that he intervened and during the commotion, one person fell ill and later died. However, Amin stated that there was no evidence of a push or physical assault.
BNP Media Cell member Shiral Kabir Khan said that the unofficial results show that Taquir Rahman has won the election. The Bangladeshi government has conducted a national referendum along with the parliamentary elections. According to unofficial results, 62% of voters have voted in favor of reforms.
