With the election campaign coming to a close in Bangladesh, the country’s electoral machinery is gearing up for the February 12 polls. According to local media, no political party or candidate will be allowed to engage in electoral activities from now on. The polling process will begin at 7 am and end at 4 pm.
In the run-up to the polls, major parties such as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami, and National Citizens Party (NCP) organized massive rallies in the capital city of Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, and other cities across the country.
The Bangladeshi authorities have revealed that there are a total of 12,077,793 registered voters in the country, with 6,048,080 being men and 6,282,000 being women. The officials also stated that 4,570,000 people will be casting their votes for the first time. A total of 2,340 candidates, including 1,759 from 51 political parties and 275 independent candidates, will contest the polls. Postal ballots will be used to cast 1,350,000 votes.
The elections will take place at 42,768 polling stations across the country. Security personnel, including the armed forces and police, will be deployed to ensure a smooth voting process. The polls will be held using white ballot papers for the national assembly and pink ballot papers for the referendum.
