In a significant escalation of tensions with Iran, India has seized three Iranian oil tankers, accused of smuggling oil in the Arabian Sea. According to Iranian media, the Indian Coast Guard stopped the tankers, Al Jafzia, Asphalt Star, and Steel Ruby, about 100 nautical miles off the coast of Mumbai in the Arabian Sea. Iranian semi-official forces reportedly used helicopters to seize the two vessels in the Persian Gulf.
This move comes after India’s withdrawal from the Chabahar port in Iran, which has been a point of contention between the two nations. Indian media reported that India had already paid Iran $120 million before US sanctions were imposed. Experts say that the seizure of Iranian tankers is a direct blow to Iran’s economy, similar to a stab in the back.
