PTI Claims Party Founder Not Involved in Corruption
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced plans to challenge the conviction of its founder, Imran Khan, and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in the Al-Qadir Trust case.
Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub stated during a press conference, “We will challenge this verdict in the superior courts.”
Opposition’s Reaction
Opposition Leader in the Senate Shibli Faraz called the day a “Black Day,” stating that the conviction is baseless and will be overturned by higher courts. He said, “Thieves roam free while honest individuals are targeted.”
Faraz highlighted Imran Khan’s initiatives, including Shaukat Khanum Hospital and Namal University, as evidence of his commitment to the nation.
PTI lawyer Faisal Chaudhry criticized NAB, accusing it of being a political tool, and argued that no evidence of financial corruption had been presented in court.
Background of the Verdict
An accountability court sentenced Imran Khan to 14 years and Bushra Bibi to 7 years in prison, along with hefty fines. The case involved allegations of irregularities in transferring £190 million from the UK’s National Crime Agency to Pakistan during Imran Khan’s tenure as prime minister in 2019.
The PTI remains confident that the sentence will be overturned through legal means.
