Case Background
An accountability court in Islamabad convicted PTI founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in the £190 million case. Judge Nasir Javed Rana sentenced Imran to 14 years in prison and Bushra to 7 years, along with heavy fines.
Imran Khan is required to pay a fine of Rs1 million, and Bushra Bibi Rs0.5 million. If they fail to pay the fines, Imran will serve an additional six months and Bushra an additional three months in jail.
The case revolves around allegations that, in 2019, Imran Khan and others adjusted Rs50 billion (equivalent to £190 million) sent by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) to the Pakistani government during his tenure as Prime Minister.
PTI’s Response
PTI Chairman Gohar stated that Imran Khan urged for negotiations to continue for the next seven days, adding that the former Prime Minister’s morale remains high and the sentence will be overturned soon.
Following the verdict, PTI announced its intention to challenge the decision in superior courts. Omar Ayub, the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, said, “We will challenge this verdict in the superior courts.”
Government’s Stance
Information Minister Ataullah Tarar declared that the conviction was based on merit and was an “open-and-shut case.” He emphasized that the case followed legal procedures and that a religious card had been used in the proceedings.
