Senior Islamabad High Court judge, Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, emphasized the vital role of women in society, stating that a household cannot function without them.
Speaking at a seminar at the Islamabad High Court, he expressed disappointment over the nation’s failure to achieve gender equality, despite constitutional assurances. “If you spend a day without a mother, wife, daughter, or sister, you will understand. As Pakistanis, we have failed to comprehend gender equality,” he remarked.
Justice Kayani questioned the lack of equal representation of women in the Judicial Commission, noting that only one woman is part of the commission formed under the 26th Constitutional Amendment.
He criticized the judiciary and legislature for their lack of commitment to advancing gender equality, calling for urgent reforms. “No reforms have been implemented at the national level to ensure women’s equality,” he observed.
Expressing concern, he highlighted that Islamabad has yet to appoint a single woman prosecutor, reflecting systemic gender disparities.
Justice Kayani proposed creating a distinct merit policy for women judges, a dedicated quota for promotions and appointments, and introducing childcare facilities and special allowances for working women.
He also raised concerns about challenges women face in taking maternity leave, noting that departmental action is often taken against them.
He stressed the need for a supportive work environment where women can balance professional and family responsibilities effectively.
Justice Kayani pledged to vote in favor of a working women’s allowance and announced plans to ensure facilities for women judges within the e-court system to enhance their efficiency.
“If this is the situation at the highest level, then what about the common man?” he asked, urging collective efforts to eliminate gender-based discrimination and empower women.
