The police reported that the accident occurred when a car hit the motorcyclists, and a water tanker coming from the rear ran over the bikes.
At least two people lost their lives and another was injured when a heavy water tanker ran over their motorbikes on Shaheed-e-Millat Road in Karachi on Friday, rescue officials said.
In this tragic incident, a rescue officer noted that the driver of the tanker fled the scene after the accident, and the tanker crashed into the flyover wall, igniting a fire. Firefighters later extinguished the blaze.
According to the police, the accident happened when a car struck the motorcyclists, and a water tanker from behind collided with the bikes.
As a result, two individuals on one bike were killed, and another on the second bike was injured. The incident occurred on the flyover track leading to Baloch Colony.
In the first 10 days of 2025, at least 22 people have lost their lives, and 261 others have been injured in road accidents in Karachi.
Expressing concerns over the fatalities caused by tanker accidents, Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori said that tankers are distributing death in the city, which is alarming.
“I stand with the heirs of the deceased in this hour of grief,” the governor said, demanding a report from the Sindh Inspector General regarding the incident.
A day earlier, two people were killed when a speeding dumper hit their bike on Hub River Road in Baldia Town.
Police and rescue officials transported the victims to the Civil Hospital Karachi for legal formalities. The deceased were identified as Akbar, 30, son of Sher, and Jamil, 30, son of Faiz.
Although heavy traffic is prohibited during the day in the city, tankers carrying essential commodities such as water are allowed due to the water crisis, putting citizens’ lives at risk.
These tragedies highlight the ongoing crisis of road safety in Karachi. According to a 2024 report on traffic accidents, 773 people lost their lives in Karachi, including 602 men, 88 women, 62 boys, and 21 girls. Additionally, 8,111 individuals were injured in traffic mishaps during the same period.
