Islamabad: Will former army chief General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa testify as a defence witness in the court martial proceedings against Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hamid? The legal team of the former spymaster has denied making any decision on this matter so far.
Lt Gen (retd) Faiz was arrested on August 12, 2024. Later, the ISPR confirmed that a Field General Court Martial (FGCM) had been initiated against him. On December 10, he was formally indicted, marking the beginning of his trial in the military court.
Details of Court Proceedings
Sources claim several hearings of the FGCM have already taken place. The prosecution is currently presenting its witnesses, after which the defence will have the opportunity to call its witnesses.
Sources further confirmed that if summoned by the court, Gen Bajwa would appear, as he is legally bound to do so.
Legal Team’s Position
Faiz’s counsel, Mian Ali Ashfaq, stated that the defence witness list would be finalised only after the prosecution completes presenting its evidence. He clarified that the stage for presenting defence witnesses has not yet arrived.
When asked about summoning Gen Bajwa as a defence witness, Ashfaq said: “The decision depends on case developments and the relevance of witnesses. Any decision will be made after careful consideration to ensure it benefits our case and does not backfire.”
He dismissed media reports claiming that the legal team had decided to present Bajwa as a witness, labeling them as baseless speculations. For now, the focus remains on the legal process and the prosecution’s witnesses.
