Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government spokesperson Barrister Saif stated that the aid convoy for Parachinar city in the crisis-hit Kurram district would be sent once the situation stabilizes. The convoy comprised over 75 vehicles ready to deliver essential items.
The convoy, scheduled to depart at 10 am today, was halted following an attack on Kurram Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsud in the Bagan area earlier today. The attack left five people, including the deputy commissioner, injured.
The district administration noted that a decision regarding the convoy would be made after assessing the situation and consulting relevant stakeholders. The convoy was arranged amid a severe shortage of medicines and essential goods in the district, declared “disaster-hit” by the provincial government last month.
The Tal-Parachinar road, reopened after three months of tribal clashes, was the route for the convoy, which was set to deliver wheat, medicines, oil, and other vital items under police and Frontier Constabulary (FC) security.
The ongoing tribal clashes in Kurram have claimed over 200 lives since July 2024. Prolonged road closures due to security concerns have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis for over 600,000 residents.
A sit-in at the Parachinar Press Club continues to demand the reopening of roads. The convoy’s planned departure followed a 14-point peace accord signed on Wednesday, which included provisions for surrendering weapons and dismantling bunkers.
Barrister Saif, advisor to the Chief Minister on Information, assured that all injured individuals are stable. He also mentioned that unknown assailants had targeted the deputy commissioner’s vehicle, injuring him and several law enforcement officials.
He confirmed that the convoy would proceed to Parachinar once conditions normalize. “As soon as the conditions return to normal, the convoy will be sent,” he stated.
The latest violence incident occurred despite the provincial government’s warning that further aggression in Kurram would be treated as terrorism once the bunkers were dismantled.
