The Information Minister Attaullah Tarar addressed a press conference on Saturday, debunking claims surrounding a viral video from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protests at D-Chowk, Islamabad. He clarified that the individual seen atop a container was not praying, as alleged, but was filming a TikTok video.
Minister’s Clarification
Tarar revealed that the man, a resident of Mandi Bahauddin, is alive and well, with only minor injuries to his hand. According to the minister, the man had challenged a friend to record a TikTok video on top of the container, refuting PTI’s narrative that he was killed while praying.
Protests and Crackdown
The protests at D-Chowk resulted in clashes between PTI supporters and law enforcement. Authorities launched a late-night crackdown on November 27 to disperse the protesters, leading to over 1,000 arrests, including Afghan nationals. Law enforcement recovered tear gas and ammunition during the operation.
Tarar stated that PTI’s claims of 20 deaths during the protests were baseless. He asserted that no bodies were received by hospitals, as confirmed by PIMS and Polyclinic officials.
Criticism of Propaganda
The minister criticized PTI for using artificial intelligence to generate fake images and recycling outdated photographs from 2019 to mislead the public. He also accused the party of spreading false narratives about sniper attacks and firing incidents at the protests, pointing out the absence of evidence.
KP Chief Minister’s Alleged Retreat
Tarar alleged that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur fled twice during the protests, leaving behind personal belongings. He emphasized that law enforcement acted with restraint, as all security personnel were unarmed during the operation.
Economic Stability Efforts
The minister highlighted the government’s efforts to stabilize the economy, noting that foreign reserves had surpassed $11 billion. He accused opposition forces of attempting to derail progress with baseless allegations and chaos.
Accountability and Trials
Tarar assured swift trials for individuals arrested during the protests and emphasized that no one involved in violent activities would be spared. He also condemned the opposition for disrespecting martyrs and sabotaging state initiatives, including an important diplomatic visit.
