Dallas police report that a shooting resulting from a long-standing dispute among three young men ended tragically, leaving one dead and another injured.
The alleged perpetrator is currently in custody with a bail set at $1 million.
The incident occurred on June 11 around 10:40 p.m. in the 400 block of South Winnetka Avenue in Oak Cliff, disturbing the typically quiet neighborhood with gunfire and speeding vehicles.
Darin Short and Wayne Brown were house-sitting for friends when the shooting unfolded.
“I was sound asleep when suddenly I heard about ten loud pops like pop! Pop! Pop! Pop,” Short recalled. “I immediately recognized it as gunfire. It sounded like it was right on our front porch.”
Police discovered Stephano Osorio, 23, fatally shot at the scene. A 16-year-old boy who was with him also sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the hospital, where he remains in stable condition, according to the Dallas Police Department (DPD).
Osorio’s family revealed that he had recently celebrated his 23rd birthday and was a student of architecture at El Centro College.
Following an investigation, detectives identified and apprehended Salvador Martinez, 20, who is now charged with murder and is held on a $1 million bond.
Both DPD and the victim’s family acknowledged the ongoing feud between the victims and Martinez. Osorio’s father mentioned that they had previously reported their home being shot at to the police but were told there wasn’t sufficient evidence to make any arrests.
Short also heard from other neighbors about the ongoing tensions between the involved parties and expressed disbelief at the level of violence exhibited.
“Having guns in the hands of kids is simply reckless. There’s no justification for it,” Short commented. “Society needs to change, plain and simple.”
