The Norwegian Nobel Committee has announced a total of 287 nominees for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, including a possible nomination of US President Donald Trump. According to Secretary of the Nobel Committee, Kristen Berg Harpviken, the list of nominees includes 208 individuals and 79 organizations, with several new names emerging compared to last year.
In an interview, Harpviken expressed her surprise at the high level of change in the list each year, considering her relatively new position as Secretary. Despite increasing global conflicts and international pressure, the Nobel Peace Prize remains an important recognition of efforts towards peace and cooperation.
Potential nominees include Yulia Navolnya, the wife of late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny; Pope Leo; and the Sudanese emergency response organization ERRC. US Senator Lisa Murkowski and Danish MP Aja Cammentz have also been nominated for their work promoting peace and cooperation in the Arctic region.
The final announcement of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner is scheduled for October 9, with the award ceremony taking place on December 10. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has clarified that the nomination process is confidential for 50 years, and that nomination does not necessarily imply endorsement by the Committee.
Other news developments include a recent small plane crash in Austin, Texas, resulting in the deaths of five people; the UAE’s ban on Iranian, Lebanese, and Iraqi travel due to ongoing regional tensions; and the Israeli transfer of a new surveillance system to the UAE.
