China has expressed concern over the United States’ move to seize an Iranian cargo ship, calling it a worrying development. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that the forced detention of the ship is a cause for concern, especially since the US-Iran negotiations are at a delicate stage. According to the US newspaper, Wall Street Journal, US President Donald Trump has made a significant claim about a potential attack on Iran.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson added that it is hoped that both parties will take responsible steps to uphold the ceasefire agreement and that China will play a constructive role in ongoing negotiations. It is worth noting that Iran had previously linked the resumption of negotiations with an end to US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Saeed Khatibzadeh, stated that the decision was communicated to Pakistan, the third-party mediator, and that the US is not taking diplomatic efforts seriously. Dr. Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, head of the Iranian negotiating team and the Iranian Parliament’s Speaker, said that progress has been made in negotiations with the US, but a long way still remains to be covered.
The spokesperson also stated that the US has violated the ceasefire agreement by imposing a naval blockade and attacking an Iranian ship, making it impossible to return the Strait of Hormuz to its normal state. The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson further stated that the US proposals are non-serious, and its demands are unrealistic, adding that Iran’s nuclear program has never been part of the negotiations.
The US media has claimed that the second round of US-Iran negotiations will begin on Wednesday. Prior to this, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi had stated that mistrust and caution are essential in dealing with enemies and improving bilateral relations. Raisi emphasized that war serves no one’s interests and that all reasonable and diplomatic paths should be taken to reduce tensions.
