US President Donald Trump has issued a new executive order warning that if pharmaceutical companies do not make deals with the government on prices, a 100% tariff can be imposed on imported patented medicines. According to the presidential order, companies that sign the “Most Favored Nation” price agreement and establish production plants in the US will be exempt from tariffs, while those that establish factories in the US but do not sign the agreement will face an initial 20% tariff that can increase to 100% over the next 4 years. US officials have given big companies 120 days and other companies 180 days to negotiate.
London-based pharmaceutical company Strazienza, among others, have been exempted from the announcement by the US government. However, 17 pharmaceutical companies have already signed price agreements, with 13 having already signed the documents. President Trump has stated that this move is necessary for national security as the US relies heavily on the importation of medicines and their components.
This announcement comes on the first anniversary of Trump’s so-called “Liberty Day” policy, when he imposed a wide range of tariffs on imports, which were later deemed unconstitutional by the US Supreme Court in February. In a statement, White House spokesperson Khateem Al-Nabi said, “We will have complete control over our territorial boundaries.”
