HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — From summer-like Saturday afternoon to wintry by Sunday morning, big changes are on the way this weekend.
The same cold front that brought strong to severe storms Saturday evening will also pave the way for a much colder Sunday. Morning lows will start in the low-mid 40s with afternoon highs only reaching the upper 50s. Factor in a northerly breeze that could gust up to 20 to 30 mph at times, there will be a wind chill factor to Sunday.
A Wind Advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. Sunday for the Barrier Islands with wind gusts potentially reaching up to 40 mph Saturday night. A Gale Warning from Matagorda Bay to the coastal waters of Galveston Bay is also in effect until 3 p.m. Sunday.
How cold will it get behind the front?
Sunday will be a chilly day with a stiff northwest wind gusting up to 35 mph in the morning. Temperatures will be in the mid-40s at that time, and highs will only rebound into the upper 50s despite all the sunshine! As the wind settles down Sunday night, temperatures are likely to dip into the middle and upper 30s across Houston. It’s looking like frost will form on rooftops and grassy surfaces across much of Southeast Texas by sunrise Monday. It’s also possible many outlying communities could enter light freeze territory.
How long will the cold weather stick around?
After our near-freezing Monday morning, temperatures will quickly rebound into seasonal territory for the rest of next week. That means you can generally expect lows in the 40s and highs in the 60s.
