Mohammad Rizwan and captain Babar Azam starred as Pakistan stayed alive at the T20 World Cup with a seven-wicket win over Canada on Tuesday. Knowing defeat would condemn them to a shock first-round exit, Rizwan and Babar put on a match-winning second-wicket partnership of 63 as Pakistan reached their target of 107 with 15 balls to spare. Opener Rizwan finished undefeated on 53 off 53 balls with two fours and a six for his 29th T20 international half-century while Babar made 33 off as many balls with one four a six. Earlier, Pakistan restricted Canada to 106-7 despite opener Aaron…

NEW YORK: Pakistan team’s assistant coach Azhar Mahmood has denied a rift between skipper Babar Azam and fast bowler pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, stating that former captain Wasim Akram’s recent assertion of the duo not being on talking terms is incorrect. According to a Press Trust of India report, former all-rounder Azhar also took a dig at everyone who feels that the national team cricketers shouldn’t have a life outside cricket, particularly after a major defeat. It is being speculated that the Pakistan squad is divided into two factions, one led by skipper Babar and the other by Shaheen. “Wasim must have…
NEW YORK: India’s batting prima donnas would want to unchain themselves from the vagaries of a much-maligned drop-in track and chance their arms freely against an impressive-but-inexperienced USA in their group league game of the T20 World Cup here on Wednesday. India, who are classified as A1 (irrespective of points), need just one more win to ensure their Super Eight berth and despite the two-paced nature of the Nassau County track, they wouldn’t like a repeat of the match against Pakistan where they lost their last seven wickets for 28 runs. Against USA, the approach could be a high-risk one…
NEW YORK: Despite embarrassing back-to-back defeats Pakistan suffered at the hands of the United States and India, fans still hope that the Babar Azam-led men will move into the next round of the T20 World Cup. Indeed, a facile seven-wicket victory against Canada here at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday gave them a new ray of hope. The current scenario for Pakistan at the global event is something like this: if India in their remaining Group A matches beat the US as well as Ireland and Pakistan win their last group match against Ireland then there are chances for the Green-shirts to…
Pakistan defeated Canada by seven wickets on Tuesday to register their first win at the T20 World Cup 2024. Here are our four talking points from that game. Powerplay woes When Pakistan began their run chase against Canada, they needed to score 107 at 5.35 an over. When the powerplay ended, that run rate had shot up to 5.65. They say fortune favours the brave. Pakistan have not been brave at this T20 World Cup. It has been a while since they have shown courage with the bat. They did play some audacious shots in phases in Ireland. But, largely, their batting…
ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet approved the Digital Nation Pakistan Act 2024 to establish the National Digital Commission and Pakistan Digital Authority on Tuesday, in a bid to ensure the digitisation of the economy and promote e-governance. During the meeting, PM Shehbaz Sharif asked the law ministry to carry out the “required review” of the act, aimed at digitising the services sector in accordance with international standards. The National Digital Commission would act as a policymaking organisation and headed by the PM, comprising federal and provincial members. The Pakistan Digital Authority would work on achieving the objectives of ‘Digital Pakistan’. Besides…
KARACHI: “Pakistan’s external account improved considerably during July-March FY24 as the current account deficit (CAD) narrowed down significantly by 87.5 per cent to $0.5 billion compared to $4.1bn last year,” reported the Economic Survey 2023-24 on Tuesday. The financial account also witnessed net inflows of $4.2bn, mainly augmented by inflows from friendly countries and official inflows, in sharp contrast to net outflows of $1.1bn during July-March FY23, it said. The improved inflows in July-March materialised amid successful implementation of reforms agreed upon as part of the Stand-By Arrangement (SBA) with the IMF. “The increase in CAD and financial support from bilateral and multilateral development…
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s public debt increased by around Rs4.64 trillion in the first nine months of the outgoing fiscal year despite a slowdown in the rate of accumulation. According to the Economic Survey 2023-24 released on Tuesday, the total public debt was recorded at Rs67.53tr at end March 2024. At the end of June 23 — the last month of FY22-23 — the figure stood at 62.88tr. The rate of debt accumulation slowed down by 54 per cent from Rs10tr in the first nine months of the last fiscal year to 4.64tr at the end of Mar 24 “due to the exchange rate…
The world is likely to have a “major surplus” of oil by 2030 as production is ramped up while the clean energy transition tempers demand, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in an annual report published on Wednesday. Global demand is expected to “level off” at 106 million barrels per day (bpd) toward the end of this decade while overall supply capacity could reach 114 million bpd — resulting in a “staggering” surplus of eight million bpd that oil markets should prepare for, the IEA said. The forecast comes days after the OPEC+ group of major crude producers signalled they would…
Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Tuesday said his country wanted to “find a solution to the issue of years-old cross-border terrorism” with Pakistan. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was sworn in on Sunday for a record-equalling third term at a grand ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the president’s palace in New Delhi, attended by leaders of seven regional countries, underlining the government’s “neighbourhood first” policy. But relations and problems with China and Pakistan were different, Jaishankar told reporters, after assuming charge for a second straight term. “With Pakistan, we would want to find a solution to the issue of years-old cross-border…
