Lahore has been placed on high security alert in the wake of the recent terror attack in Islamabad, according to CCPO Lahore, Umar Sheikh. In a statement, Mr. Sheikh said that special security measures have been taken for mosques, Imam Bargahs, and other religious places. He directed the police to ensure the best possible security arrangements for public places and markets, and to increase the vigilance of entry and exit points in the city.
The CCPO has also instructed supervisory officers to remain active in the field, maintain continuous monitoring, and have police teams keep a special eye on hotspots. Mr. Sheikh further directed the authorities to maintain surveillance over the city’s roads and important areas through the Safe City Authority’s camera network. He appealed to the public to immediately inform the police or the nearest thana in case of any suspicious activity.
It’s worth mentioning that a terrorist attack on a mosque in Islamabad on the previous day resulted in the loss of 32 lives and over 170 injured. The Ministry of Interior has stated that the evidence suggests that the planning, training, and indoctrination of the attackers were carried out by ISIS in Afghanistan under the patronage of Afghan Taliban. The anti-terrorism court has sentenced Imran Mazari and his husband Hadi Ali Chishti to 17 years in prison each, and they are currently serving their sentence in the Adiala Jail.
The United Nations has condemned the terrorist attack in Islamabad and reiterated its support for the Pakistani government and people in their fight against terrorism and extremism. Justice Ali Baqar Najafi has stated that the Supreme Court will try to expedite its decision on any case that comes before it. The police have claimed that they have recovered arms from a person taken into custody.
