The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has launched a new initiative to tackle the issue of water scarcity through artificial rain. The plan involves conducting environmentally-friendly research before implementing cloud seeding programs, with research grants worth $1.5 million awarded to scientists from the US, Germany, and Australia.
Three scientists have been selected to conduct research under the Emirates National Centre for Metrology over the next three years, focusing on modern technology to increase rainfall. The selection process involved 140 proposals from 48 countries, with each selected scientist receiving a maximum grant of $1.5 million over three years.
One scientist will receive a maximum of $550,000 over one year. Artificial intelligence is being used in cloud seeding, with UAE authorities claiming it will help identify the correct clouds and lead to better results.
The UAE receives very little rainfall annually, and most of its water supply is obtained by desalinating seawater. The country has been conducting cloud seeding operations for several years. The new research initiative aims to improve agriculture and water reserves in the UAE.
