RABAT: A devastating disaster struck the city of Fez (Fes) in northeastern Morocco, where two four-story residential buildings suddenly collapsed in the densely populated Al-Masira area. The incident has resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 19 people and left 16 others injured, who have been rushed to the hospital.
According to Arab media reports, the tragedy occurred on Wednesday morning. Both buildings were located in the newer part of the city and housed a total of eight resident families, leaving no time for the occupants to escape the sudden structural failure.
Rescue teams are currently engaged in a large-scale operation to extract more people from the rubble and provide medical attention to the injured. As a precautionary measure, authorities have also evacuated surrounding structures.
A thorough government investigation has been immediately launched to determine the precise causes behind the collapse of the two residential structures. Authorities are examining whether the disaster was due to substandard construction quality, a lapse in urban safety regulations, or other critical technical failures.
