The Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, has issued a significant political statement indicating its willingness to surrender its weapons to the Palestinian Authority (PA) on the condition that Israel ends its military occupation of Palestinian territories. The proposal marks a crucial development regarding future security arrangements in Gaza.
Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya confirmed to Turkish media that the organization’s weapons are directly tied to the aggression and the ongoing occupation. He stated that should the Israeli occupation cease, these arms would be handed over to the state.
Regarding international oversight, Hamas proposed accepting the deployment of a United Nations force to monitor the borders and ensure compliance with any ceasefire. However, this acceptance comes with the stipulation that the force must act strictly as a neutral separation entity. Al-Hayya firmly rejected the deployment of any international force whose mandate is focused on forcibly disarming the movement.
The statement is released amid a sensitive period, as Israeli bombardment has continued in Gaza despite previously agreed-upon ceasefires, resulting in dozens of new casualties and underscoring the urgency for a stable resolution.
