Following his landmark election as the Mayor of New York City, the Muslim Socialist Democrat candidate Zohran Mamdani delivered an impassioned victory speech, declaring that he and his supporters have “made history” in the city. His victory, achieved despite strong opposition from the Republican camp and Donald Trump, signals a new era of political change in New York.
Addressing his jubilant supporters, Mamdani emphasized the strength of the populace: “The people of New York have proven that power is in their hands. We have made history in New York, the future is in our hands.”
He framed his win as a “vote for change” by New York citizens. The Mayor-elect pledged his allegiance to the public: “I will take the oath of office as the Mayor of New York on January 1st… We will fight for you because we are one of you; this is your city, and democracy is yours.”
The Defeat of Fear and the End of Islamophobia
Mamdani hailed the victory as an entry into a new era of leadership and thanked the more than one thousand volunteers who participated in his campaign. He made it clear that the election was a triumph of hope, declaring, “Today’s election has proven that hope is still alive; today, fear has been defeated, and hope has won.”
He announced a major political shift in New York, stating that he has put an end to “hereditary politics” in the city. Crucially, as a Muslim leader, he declared unequivocally: “There is no room for Islamophobia in New York; Islamophobia will no longer be spread in New York.” He proudly identified himself as a “Muslim and a Democratic Socialist.”
A Four-Sentence Message to Trump
Concluding his address, Mamdani directly challenged President Donald Trump, a strong opponent of his candidacy. He stated, “Donald Trump, I know you are watching. Donald Trump, I will say four sentences to you.”
- We will stand with the unions for workers’ rights.
- Immigrants have made New York City strong.
- New York is no longer a city where elections can be won in the name of Islamophobia.
