In a stunning move that has sparked global concern, US President Donald Trump on Thursday ordered the military to “immediately” resume the testing of nuclear weapons. This decision threatens to undermine decades of international efforts aimed at controlling nuclear proliferation.
President Trump defended the directive, stating that the United States must be on “equal footing” with other nations that possess active nuclear testing programs.
“I have ordered the Department of War to begin testing nuclear weapons, and this process must happen immediately,” President Trump declared.
The president further asserted his belief that the US currently possesses the largest arsenal of weapons in the world, with Russia holding the second spot. He also expressed concern that China could potentially match the US arsenal within the next five years. He emphasized that his decision is justified by the fact that other countries have ongoing testing programs.
