The Sindh government has taken another major step toward improving urban mobility for millions in Karachi, announcing the decision to open a key section of the Yellow Line BRT, the Taj Haider Bridge, to the public. Alongside this, a new electric bus (EV) route from Gulshan-e-Maymar to Tower was also unveiled, paving the way for more modern and eco-friendly travel.
These decisions were made in a high-level meeting of the transport department, chaired by Senior Provincial Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. The meeting also saw the announcement of a revolutionary project aimed at empowering the people of Sindh, especially women.
Following its program in Karachi, the Sindh government is now launching a scooter training program for women and female students in Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Larkana. Sharjeel Memon stated that this training is not just a means of transport, but “a significant step towards women’s independence and increasing employment opportunities.” He noted the training would be provided in collaboration with a private company, and all women who complete the training will be issued free driving licenses to ensure no financial burden on them.
Providing further details, the minister said the new route from Gulshan-e-Maymar to Tower will consist of 15 EV buses. Additionally, the Peoples Bus Service will be expanded to Khairpur, Shikarpur, and Naushahro Feroze with 20 new buses.
There was more good news for Karachi’s residents, as Memon confirmed that a new fleet of double-decker and EV buses is scheduled to arrive soon. He also revealed that an EV taxi service will be launched in December, with an initial phase that includes a plan to train female drivers for 30 pink EV taxis.
