In a major move aimed at reshaping the tech landscape, ChatGPT creator OpenAI has launched its new artificial intelligence-powered web browser, “ChatGPT Atlas.” The launch is being seen as a direct assault on Google Chrome’s long-standing dominance in the browser market.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman unveiled the new product in a live presentation, describing it as an “AI-powered web browser” built on the capabilities of ChatGPT.
The browser is immediately available globally for Apple’s macOS, with the company confirming that versions for Windows, iOS, and Android will be “available soon.”
The market reacted instantly to the news. Shares of Alphabet, Chrome’s parent company, fell by 2.6% in afternoon trading, reflecting the perceived threat of the new competitor.
Atlas is the latest entry into the rapidly growing AI browser market, joining products like Perplexity’s Comet and Opera’s Neon. These new-generation browsers are attracting users by offering built-in tools that can summarize web pages, fill out forms, and even draft code.
The Atlas browser provides users with a ChatGPT sidebar in any window, allowing them to summarize content, compare products, or analyze data from any website.
Its most powerful feature, however, is the “Agent Mode.” In this mode, ChatGPT actively interacts with websites on the user’s behalf, enabling it to perform complex, end-to-end tasks such as researching and booking an entire trip.
