Mumbai:
Veteran Indian actor and comedian Gordhan Asrani, affectionately known simply as Asrani, has passed away at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness. With his death, Indian cinema bids farewell to a timeless entertainer whose wit and warmth lit up the silver screen for over five decades.
Asrani’s most memorable role — the British-era jailer in the classic film Sholay — remains etched in cinematic history. His quirky dialogue delivery, distinctive expressions, and perfect comic timing turned the character into an enduring part of India’s pop culture.
According to Indian media, Asrani appeared in over 350 films, balancing comedy with depth and grace. His performances were marked by versatility — equally convincing in laughter, satire, and subtle emotional moments.
A graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Asrani began his career in the 1960s and went on to work with legendary filmmakers such as Rajesh Khanna, Raj Kapoor, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, and Gulzar. His effortless humor and humble personality made him a household name across generations.
His last appearance was in the adult comedy film Mastizaade (2016), where he played the father of actress Sunny Leone’s character.
Critics remember Asrani as “a gentle soul who made millions laugh” — a performer who proved that humor, when done with heart, becomes timeless.
