In a swift turn of events, Afghanistan has withdrawn from the Pakistan-hosted T20 Tri-Nation Series, but Zimbabwe has stepped in to ensure the tournament goes ahead as planned.
The series, scheduled from November 17 to 29 in Rawalpindi and Lahore, will now feature Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe.
Afghanistan’s cricket board cited administrative and logistical reasons for pulling out of the tour, prompting the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to approach Zimbabwe. Within hours, Zimbabwe confirmed its participation, a move hailed as a boost for regional cricket cooperation.
According to the PCB, the event will proceed on its original schedule.
The opening match will be played between Pakistan and Zimbabwe on November 17 in Rawalpindi, while Sri Lanka will face Zimbabwe on November 19.
Cricket analysts see this as an example of sports diplomacy in action, underscoring Pakistan’s efforts to maintain cricketing continuity despite regional challenges.
PCB officials described Zimbabwe’s decision as “a reaffirmation of cricketing solidarity,” while fans welcomed the inclusion of the African side, saying it would make the competition “more exciting and unpredictable.”
With the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup approaching, the tri-series will serve as an ideal preparation platform for all participating teams — and a chance for Pakistan to test its bench strength at home turf.
