President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he is nominating State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce to be the next U.S. deputy representative to the United Nations. Bruce has served as the State Department spokesperson since Trump took office in January. In a social media post, Trump praised her “fantastic job” in her current role. Her nomination for the new position will require confirmation by the U.S. Senate, where the Republican Party holds a majority.
During her tenure as spokesperson, Bruce has publicly defended the Trump administration’s foreign policy. This includes her defense of policies related to immigration crackdowns, visa revocations, the U.S. response to Russia’s war in Ukraine, and Israel’s war in Gaza, including a private armed aid operation that drew widespread criticism. Before joining the administration, Bruce was a political contributor and commentator for Fox News for over two decades. She is also the author of several books that criticize liberal and left-leaning viewpoints.
Following the announcement, Bruce thanked the president in an online post, suggesting that she is “a few weeks” away from taking on the new role. The nomination of her future boss, Mike Waltz, as the U.S. envoy to the UN is also still pending Senate confirmation. Waltz, a former national security adviser, was removed from that position in May and then nominated to be the UN ambassador. If confirmed, Bruce would serve under him.
