In Nepal, continuous rainfall has resulted in flooding and landslides, leading to the deaths of 66 individuals and leaving over 69 citizens missing, with significant damage to roads and other properties.
According to reports from the foreign news agency Reuters, important highways are closed due to the rains, floods, and landslides, causing disruption at airports as well.
Interior Ministry official Dil Kumar Tamang stated that the death toll is expected to rise as 69 people remain unaccounted for since yesterday, with 60 others injured.
The highest number of fatalities has occurred in the Kathmandu Valley, home to nearly four million people, where the floods have disrupted traffic and daily life.
Rescue workers are attempting to evacuate stranded residents from rooftops and other locations using helicopters and rubber boats, with 322.2 millimeters of rain recorded in various areas of Kathmandu in just one day.
Officials noted that river flows in many areas of the Himalayan region have increased, affecting several roads and bridges, as the annual monsoon rains have impacted the entire region.
Police spokesperson Dhan Bahadur Karki mentioned that police are working to clear debris and reopen blocked roads at 28 locations.
Meanwhile, the meteorological department has indicated that the rainfall intensity has increased due to a system forming in neighboring India, with heavy rain expected until Sunday morning, after which the weather is expected to clear.
It is noteworthy that in June of this year, landslides following rainfall resulted in hundreds of deaths in Nepal and caused damage to infrastructure. Authorities reported that since the onset of rains in mid-June, landslides, flooding, and lightning strikes have led to the deaths of 254 people, with more than 65 individuals still missing.
