Sri Lankan batter Kamindu Mendis has equaled Babar Azam’s two-year-old record in the ongoing Test match against New Zealand.
In the second Test match being played in Galle, Mendis achieved this milestone by scoring a half-century against New Zealand, matching Babar Azam’s record for consecutive Test half-centuries.
He has now matched the record for scoring eight consecutive half-centuries in Test cricket, a feat that Babar Azam accomplished back in 2022.
Additionally, Kamindu Mendis is the first Sri Lankan player to score 50 or more runs in each of his first eight Test matches, surpassing Pakistan’s Saud Shakeel, who previously held the record with seven consecutive scores above 50.
Most Consecutive Scores Above 50 in Tests:
– **8 Matches**: Kamindu Mendis (Sri Lanka)
– **7 Matches**: Saud Shakeel (Pakistan)
– **6 Matches**: Sunil Gavaskar (India)
Mendis began his Test career for Sri Lanka in Galle against Australia in 2022, where he made an impressive score of 61, contributing to his team’s innings victory.
Despite a brilliant start, Mendis was out of the Test team for nearly two years. However, he made a comeback during the recent series against Bangladesh and has now equaled Babar Azam’s record by scoring his eighth half-century in as many matches.
