Due to the current political situation in Bangladesh, star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan’s dream of concluding his Test career on home ground may remain unfulfilled.
According to media reports, the star cricketer announced his retirement from international cricket just before the start of the Kanpur Test, although he plans to continue representing the team in One Day Internationals (ODIs). The Champions Trophy, scheduled to take place in Pakistan next year, will be his final ODI tournament, after which he is expected to retire from international cricket by March 2025.
In a four-hour meeting held on September 26, chaired by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Farooq Ahmed, decisions regarding Shakib’s future were discussed. The board expressed uncertainty about whether Shakib would be able to play his last Test match on home ground due to the ongoing political tensions, which have impacted security provisions.
“Shakib will have to make his own decisions regarding his future, as security is beyond our control. It is possible that the final Test against India might be his last match,” the board noted.
Currently, Shakib is navigating one of the most challenging periods in his life, facing serious allegations including fraud and murder. The all-rounder, affiliated with the party of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has been absent from Bangladesh since the political upheaval that led to Hasina’s ousting.
The situation surrounding Shakib Al Hasan remains complex, as he balances his cricketing career with serious legal challenges and the instability of his home country.
