HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A man tragically died after collapsing and being run over by a METRORail train on Thursday evening.
The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. at the Texas Medical Center Transit Center on Fannin Street, according to METRO officials.
The man reportedly fell between two train cars as one of the trains was departing the station.
“A passenger fell backwards,” said METRO Chief Safety Officer Santiago Osorio. “Our police department is still in the process of investigating.”
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Osorio noted that the victim was struck by the same train car he had exited just moments before.
It remains unclear what caused the man to collapse—whether he tripped accidentally or suffered a medical emergency. METRO officials do not suspect foul play in what they describe as an “isolated” incident.
The METRORail driver involved has been removed from driving duties while the investigation continues.
As a result of the incident, delays were experienced on the METRORail Red Line, with shuttle buses provided between the Fannin South and Hermann Park/Rice University stations.
inquired about safety sensors on the tracks to alert drivers if someone is on the rails, learning that while there are no such sensors, drivers are required to inspect multiple cameras on board before departing.
Normal rail service has since resumed, but the incident has served as a somber reminder for riders to stay aware of their surroundings while using public transportation.
“I think people need to be more cautious and aware of their surroundings,” said Michael Pickens, a METRORail passenger, before boarding.
