HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A southeast Houston family is devastated after their pet cat died in a house fire that started when their power was restored. The incident occurred early Friday morning on Hirondel Street while Crystal Hailey and her three daughters were staying at a friend’s house.
“I feel lost. I feel lost and alone, and I just don’t know what to do,” Hailey said in an exclusive interview with Eyewitness News.
Following Hurricane Beryl, which caused a tree to fall onto the power lines leading to her house, Hailey reported the issue to CenterPoint.
“I was concerned with the tree limbs being on the electric line,” Hailey explained.
Hailey claims that CenterPoint representatives assured her the tree limbs would be removed before power was restored. However, that did not happen.
While the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, Hailey suspects it might be related to the power lines. The fire started at the same time power was restored to her neighborhood.
“I think it would be preventable if they would have removed the tree limbs,” Hailey said.
reached out for a comment, but CenterPoint stated that they are investigating the matter.
