CenterPoint Energy is actively working to restore power for thousands of Houston residents who have been without electricity since Thursday’s severe storm.
As of 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, approximately 72,142 customers remained without power for the fifth consecutive day, according to the CenterPoint Energy Outage Tracker. Over the past 24 hours, around 208,000 customers have had their power restored, bringing the total number of restored customers to over 840,000 since the storm hit.
To aid in tracking outages, CenterPoint has introduced an interactive map where users can zoom in to specific areas and enter addresses to view estimated restoration dates. Additionally, they’ve launched a neighborhood-based outage tracker to provide updates as power is restored, covering areas such as Baytown, Bellaire, Cypress, Greenspoint, Humble, and Spring Branch.
Despite progress, significant damage has been reported in parts of Bellaire, the Heights, Lazybrook-Timbergrove, Cottage Grove, and Spring Branch, slowing down restoration efforts. However, CenterPoint expects to substantially complete restoration by Wednesday evening.
Due to ongoing power issues, several school districts, including Channelview, Cy-Fair, Galena Park, and Spring Branch ISDs, remained closed on Tuesday. Houston ISD closed 38 schools, including Heights High School, which experienced air conditioning failure on Monday, prompting early dismissal. Students were seen trying to cool off by opening windows, and some parents were asked to bring fans to the school.
Despite concerns from students about the heat, HISD Superintendent Mike Miles deemed the day “successful,” stating that the decision to close schools was based on temperature assessments conducted by maintenance staff. In total, three HISD schools closed early on Monday due to air conditioning issues and a gas leak.
