HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Thousands of residents in the Houston area are in the dark as thunderstorms rolled in on Monday.
At 3:14 p.m., more than 20,355 customers were without power, according to CenterPoint Energy’s tracker.
That number went down to about 16,000 but skyrocketed again to 23,713 by 4 p.m. and continued to climb for about 20 minutes, reaching 34,932.
Data shows the majority of the outages are in northwest Harris and Montgomery Counties.
At 4:45 p.m., more than 51,000 customers were experiencing outages.
According to the electricity provider, more than 13,000 customers had power restored within the past 24 hours. And as of 8:45 p.m., 5,700 customers were still experiencing outages.
Monday is an Weather Alert Day with chances for strong to severe thunderstorms, including the risk of tornadoes. A Tornado Watch has been issued for southeast Texas until the storms pass. They should be east of Houston by 7 p.m.
