In Houston, Texas, the recent days have been marked by a surge in violence, with a significant involvement of the city’s youth.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, there has been a nationwide increase of approximately 12% in teen gun violence from 2021 to 2022.
“We had a challenging weekend, with juveniles engaged in gunplay and similar incidents,” remarked Lt. Robert Schields Jr. of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. “Many times, these guns are either stolen or accessed surreptitiously from their parents.”
On December 15 at 2 a.m., a drive-by shooting in northeast Harris County left three teenagers, aged 14, 15, and 16, injured. The driver, believed to be just 14 years old, had three other teenagers in the car with him.
Later that evening, a 15-year-old and an adult were victims of another drive-by shooting in the northwest part of the county.
The following morning, on December 16, a 14-year-old was shot during a robbery in northwest Houston.
“We need to face the truth. Parents know when their kids are associating with troubled peers,” expressed Lt. Schields. “The diminishing respect and response that juveniles show toward authority are evident.”
Tragically, on December 17, a man was shot and killed at his grandson’s birthday party. The celebration, meant for the grandson’s 18th birthday, turned into a somber event as Michael Sanchez witnessed his grandfather being struck by a bullet.
“I saw everything right in front of my face when the bullet hit him,” shared Sanchez. “He told me when it happened, ‘Look what happened: I got shot.'”
Sanchez revealed that the incident occurred during what should have been a joyous occasion. “If it wasn’t for him, none of this party, nothing would happen, but they want to take away my grandpa’s life on my birthday,” he lamented.
