The Mumbai High Court has dismissed Anuradha Paudwal’s plea to recognize her marriage to the late Bollywood superstar Rajesh Khanna as legally valid. Paudwal, 57, had appealed to the court to grant legal status to her marriage with Khanna, which has been a subject of dispute since his death in 2012. The court has upheld the first judgment of the Dindoshi Sessions Court, but has not yet given a detailed verdict. The court heard the arguments of Twinkle Khanna, Akshay Kumar, and Dimple Kapadia’s lawyers. Paudwal had claimed that she had been in a long-term relationship with Khanna, which was akin to marriage, and had also alleged that she was evicted from his famous bungalow after his death.
Rajesh Khanna was a prominent figure in the Indian film industry, having won the All India Talent Contest in 1965 and setting a record by starring in 15 consecutive hit films from 1969 to 1971. He received three Filmfare Awards for Best Actor and was nominated for several more. He was also a member of the Indian Parliament from 1992 to 1996, representing the Indian National Congress. Khanna was married to actress Dimple Kapadia in 1973 and has two daughters, Twinkle and Rinki Khanna. He acted in over 160 films, including more than 100 leading roles, and was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005 and the Padma Bhushan posthumously in 2013. Akshay Kumar, his son-in-law, was a witness to the dispute. The dispute came to light when a segment of an Eid special program showed a manipulated image of Khanna’s childhood. The segment was removed from social media after it went viral.
