In Houston, Texas, the National Center for Transgender Equality has just unveiled the initial findings from the 2022 U.S. Trans Survey, the most comprehensive survey to date on the experiences and lifestyles of transgender individuals. Eyewitness News caught up with the center’s executive director, Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen, to discuss the outcomes.
The survey, conducted by academics, indicates that while a majority of transgender individuals find fulfillment in living authentically, instances of discrimination remain pervasive.
In particular, Texas ranks among the top 10 states witnessing a significant exodus of transgender individuals due to the adverse social climate. Heng-Lehtinen lamented the fact that five percent of transgender people have already relocated, with Texas being a prominent destination. He emphasized the emotional and logistical challenges associated with such relocations, underscoring their burdensome nature.
Moreover, Heng-Lehtinen expressed hope that the comprehensive findings of the survey will help dispel misconceptions surrounding transgender individuals and their daily realities.
