The severe pilot crisis plaguing Indiaโs private carrier, IndiGo, which led to the cancellation of over 1,200 flights in just four days, has caused an unprecedented social disruption. One of the most unique consequences of this crisis was a newly married couple being forced to miss their own wedding reception.

The wedding reception for software engineers Mehakshar Sagar and Sangam Das, which was scheduled to take place on December 3rd in Hubballi, Karnataka, proceeded without the bride and groom, who were stranded 1,400 kilometers away in Bengaluru.

The couple was supposed to arrive in Hubballi on December 2nd. However, after an overnight wait and anxiety, they were informed early on December 3rd that their flight had been cancelled, with no alternative travel options available.
๐ช The Digital Substitute
The brideโs mother described the news as “extremely upsetting” for the family, who had organized an elaborate reception. Since the guests had already arrived, the families decided to proceed with the event. A screen was set up in the hall, and the reception was held virtually, with Mehakshar and Sangam greeting guests via video conference.
๐ธ Parents Fill the Seats
In the most poignant scene, the bride’s parents sat in the empty seats reserved for the couple and performed the customary formal procedures. The couple, meanwhile, remained connected digitally, hosting their guests remotely. This incident serves as a striking example of the damaging impact of the airline crisis, turning a traditional celebration into an entirely digital affair.
