Jerusalem, Israel โ In a highly unusual diplomatic intervention, Israeli President Isaac Herzog has rejected a request from US President Donald Trump to pardon Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from his ongoing corruption charges. The decision underscores the critical importance of respecting the legal system of a sovereign nation.
According to reports from Arab media, US President Donald Trump sent a letter to the Israeli President, labeling the corruption allegations against Netanyahuโwhich the Prime Minister has been facing for the past five yearsโas “political and unjust,” and requesting a pardon.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog responded to the appeal with a clear stance. He stated, “I respect President Trumpโs friendship and his opinion,” but immediately emphasized that “Israel is a sovereign country, and its legal system must be fully respected.”
President Herzog referred to the request as “certainly an unusual request” and stressed that his “first, second, and third priority is the welfare of the Israeli people.” This decision firmly rejects foreign political interference in Israel’s domestic affairs and upholds the principle of judicial independence.
