Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has firmly rejected a suggestion from Donald Trump that a “territory swap” could be a way to end Russia’s war on Ukraine. In the wake of this proposal, European leaders have reiterated their support for Kyiv ahead of a planned meeting between the US President and Russia’s Vladimir Putin. Zelenskyy stated unequivocally that Ukraine will not cede any of its land. He declared that “Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier” and that Ukraine would “not give Russia any awards for what it has done.”
This rejection comes as preparations are underway for a summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska. The Ukrainian leader stressed that any peace agreement that does not include Ukraine would be meaningless and unworkable. European leaders have also issued a joint statement, underscoring their unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and emphasizing that “the path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine.”
