YouTube is set to launch a new feature that will use artificial intelligence to estimate the age of its users. The update, which is scheduled to take effect on August 13, 2025, is designed to provide a safer and more appropriate experience based on a user’s age. The company has stated that the technology will first be trialed on a select group of users in the United States. This system will utilize machine learning to analyze various factors, including account history, video categories watched, and search activity, to determine a user’s age. If the AI identifies a user as potentially being underage, age-based restrictions will be automatically applied. In cases where the AI is unable to accurately determine the age, users will have the option to verify they are over 18 by submitting official identification, such as a government-issued ID or a credit card. YouTube has indicated that the feature will be rolled out gradually to other countries following the initial trial.
